IRELAND is to play a major role in developing policies to address rural decline in Europe when its hosts the EU presidency next year.

Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Minister Eamon Ó Cuiv will host two major EU conferences in Connemara and Westport.

He said it is absolutely vital that Ireland take a pro-active part in shaping the European agenda towards rural development.
