Case for Groceries Order will be difficult to make

FARMERS have been strong supporters for the retention of the Groceries Order. They fear being the ultimate losers in under-cost selling at retail level. Understandably then, the review of the order and the decision on its future concerns them.

They will have their opportunity to make their case for the retention of the status quo over the coming weeks. But any restriction on the lowering of prices to the consumer will be more difficult to justify in the current environment.

Farming leaders have a difficult task ahead in establishing a sufficiently strong case for the retention of the order in its present format.
