Watch out for navel infection

MARCH always brings an increase in the amount of navel infections, according to my veterinary contacts.

Watch out for navel infection

Disinfection is paramount; all navels should be disinfected thoroughly with iodine, or a similar disinfecting product.

When checking new-born calves, the navel should be examined for swelling. Spotting swelling early allows for early intervention with an antibiotic. Navel ill can be treated successfully; however, late detection can lead to the problem progressing into joint ill, from which there is little chance of recovery.
