ANOTHER milestone in farming economics passed quietly and almost unnoticed last week.
New era for farming has started with unsupported male cattle

The first male animals without entitlement to EU support on a headage basis were born on farms, as the industry enters a new era.

Animals with a date of birth after May 31, 2004, have become the first males without direct support in more than a decade, bringing to an end the familiar sales yard terms of “clean ears”, “single premium”, etc, which have become part of the farming dialogue in the marts since the early Nineties.
