Farm safety measures ‘urgently needed’

The number of deaths and injuries through accidents on farms is shocking, according to Fine Gael agriculture spokesperson Denis Naughten, who has called for urgent measures to improve farm safety.

He said 133 people have died on farms in the last eight years, 36 of whom were children. Hundreds of other children over the same period have to live with painful and sometimes permanent reminders of just how dangerous a farm can be.

“This loss of life on family farms cannot be tolerated and an increased focus on awareness and safety campaigns is clearly needed,” he said, adding that farms must reach the same high safety standards required of all other workplaces.
