IT is an ill wind that does not blow good for someone, and problems of foot and mouth in Brazil and high cattle prices in Argentina continue to blow stronger prices in the direction of Irish cattle farmers.

The real test of the trade comes when supply is surging forward. But when intake reached a three year high for April, there was no easing in demand, nor in the improvement in prices - which supports expectations that the best is yet to come, and cattle farmers will enjoy the best spring and early summer prices for many years.

Factory quotes were improved by up to 3 cents/kg (1p/lb) when slaughtering resumed on Tuesday after the holiday week-end.
