Farm gate value of strawberries doubles

The farm gate value of strawberries is estimated at €22 million, which is double the sector’s 2001 value.

Horticulture Minister John Browne, speaking at the opening of the 36th Enniscorthy Strawberry Fair, said this represents a significant expansion.

It was brought about by increased consumer demand and a move to indoor growing which has resulted in much higher yields and an extended growing season.
