THERE is an old saying among livestock farmers, “It takes the live trade to keep the dead trade alive.”

They depend on the export trade, dead or alive, to market more than 90% of what they produce, a huge reliance on outside factors to deliver their incomes.

They know from experience that a “dead” trade in live cattle exports has always been enormously detrimental to their returns from the dead trade at the factories. Both trades must be maintained.
