ONLY one animal, out of more than 600,000 aged between 30 and 48 months, has tested positive for BSE in Ireland since January 1, 2001.

Up to last weekend investigations by the Department of Agriculture and Food into the discovery of BSE in this 45 months old bull in Co Limerick had drawn a blank.

A special surveillance unit spent the past few weeks in Co Limerick, examining all relevant documentation, farm management practices and the feeding regime on the farm where the bull was detected. “I expect an outcome to those investigations very shortly. That is essential, having regard to the importance of our food industry for consumers in Ireland and worldwide,” said Minister Walsh.
