The risk of importing danger with feed and livestock
In 2001, the dreaded foot-and-mouth disease came into the country via imported livestock. A number of other unwelcome exotic livestock diseases have found their way into Ireland in recent years. Johne’s Disease is just one example of infection that has devastated some herds.
Sooner or later, imports of food, livestock or animal feed will put farmers’ livelihoods in dire danger again, unless monitoring at the point of entry becomes fully effective.
