FARMERS have long been pioneers of recycling, by traditionally returning livestock wastes to the soil.

So they will welcome new uses being developed for onion waste, of which more than 450,000 tonnes is produced each year in Europe.

The discarded peelings are not suitable as fodder for animals and are usually dumped, at a cost, in landfill sites.
