THE country’s multi-million euro potato industry could potentially be destroyed, if an outbreak of ring rot disease arrives on an infected load.

Food Minister Noel Treacy said yesterday the response of growers to a Department of Agriculture and Food request late last year to provide data on their seed sources was “very disappointing” to date.

The potato industry is worth some €95 million to some 800 growers who produce around 500,000 tonnes grown annually. Mr Treacy urged all growers to reply to the Department’s letter and to provide requested information on seed sourced abroad.
