IT’S about time the problems in Ireland’s largest indigenous export were seriously tackled within the Social Partnership, which is credited with helping to transform us from Third World Europe to Celtic Tiger.

Opinions are divided on how much the Partnership process, in place since 1987, giving interest groups outside of elected representatives an active role in national policy, has contributed to economic recovery.

But it is clear it has done little for farmers.
