CONTINENTAL livestock farmers face a difficult, costly winter after drought has left them short of feed.

Lack of forage and rising compound feed prices are predicted to cost €200 on average per livestock unit in France, with the extra cost for purchased fodder expected to average €30,000 per farm. Italy, Germany, Austria, Spain, and Portugal are the other worst affected countries.

But Hungary, Estonia and Slovakia will also feel the financial impact of drought and forest fires, which COPA, the European union of farm organisations, has estimated at €13.1bn across the continent.
