Irish to pay €9,581,000 for milk over-production

Farmers are heading for another milk super-levy bill next April. In some southern co-op areas, more than 10% of suppliers had filled their total quotas by the end of September, and more than one third of suppliers will have their quotas filled in early spring.

The year to next April also promises to be one of the worst in the 22-year history of milk quotas for temporary leasing, because quota is being held onto by most farmers until March 31 next, in order to maximise their dairy premium payment up to 2013. Milk intake for processing was almost 0.6% over quota for the year to the end of July, and supply figures in August were running 6% ahead of last year in many co-ops.
