We will end up getting our sugar from Brazil, and when the giant South American agri-exporter commercialises GM sugar-cane, we will be stuck with genetically modified material to sweeten our tea.

Free trade in sugar means “a race to the bottom”, with development of transgenic cane likely to determine whether Brazil or Australia dominates world sugar trading.
