THE livelihoods of tens of thousands of Irish farmers are being put at risk by the EU nitrates directive, it was claimed yesterday.

Fine Gael Euro South candidate, Simon Coveney, TD, said the nitrates directive and action plan for Ireland is a major issue for Irish farmers, perhaps even more important than decoupling.

“Commercial farming in Ireland, as we know it, will not be viable if the action plan is implemented,” he said.
