Food industry urged to fight obesity

The food industry was urged yesterday to be proactive in the fight against obesity.

EU Commissioner David Byrne told a Teagasc-run international food conference in Dublin that obesity has emerged as one of the most significant problems facing European society.

"Barely a week goes by without a new dire warning about the potential catastrophic consequences if we fail to arrest and then reverse current trends towards overweight and obesity," he said.
