Almost 90% of Irish beef exports have been sold into non-third world markets in 2003 – a reversal of the pattern of sales within a decade.

In 1995, Irish beef processors were dependent on third world markets for 87.7% of beef exports. That was the year prior to the collapse of export markets resulting from the BSE outbreak in 1996.

The Irish performance in transferring reliance for markets from third world markets has been significantly stronger than for the EU as a whole.
