PROGRESSIVE modernisation, not destruction or revolution, is what is needed to bring about greater efficiencies in the dairy processing industry, the Irish Dairy Board’s managing director declared yesterday.

Dr Noel Cawley declined to comment on a recent statement by Dairygold Co-op chief executive Jerry Henchy that the €1.8 billion-turnover Irish Dairy Board needs to radically transform its structures.

But in response to queries by reporters about the processing sector generally, he said greater efficiencies were required and these should be brought about through progressive modernisation, not destruction or revolution. There will be four or five years to plan it.
