EUROPEAN Union enlargement must not be allowed in any way to weaken or dilute the security and integrity of its food safety system.

The European Commission issued the warning at a two-day international food safety conference held at Dublin Castle as part of the Irish EU presidency.

Mrs Husu-Kallio, representing Commissioner David Byrne, said the commission is continuing to help and support the new member states to bring their food safety structures and systems up to scratch. Ultimately, it is for them to deliver on their obligations and commitments.
