Beef classification gets boost

THE introduction of mechanical classification of beef carcasses from January 1, 2004, is being progressed to remove any suspicion of subjectivity.

Agriculture and Food Minister Joe Walsh said mechanical grading trials will be carried out in Ireland in November with three types of machines.

“Previous pilot tests on these machines achieved high accuracy results in conformation, fatness and meat content,” he said.
