A GRADUAL phased switch-on of mechanical grading machines in meat processing factories has started.

They will replace visual classification of beef carcases in the plants. The installation process will continue until all twenty-five machines are operational.

Agriculture and Food Minister Mary Coughlan earlier welcomed the prospect of Ireland being among the first European Union countries to classify beef carcases by mechanical means.
