‘Agriculture requires rural development’

Brussels: Rural development is the life insurance policy for agriculture in the future, EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel told the European Parliament yesterday.

However, she admitted to Fine Gael MEP Mairead McGuinnesss there may not be sufficient funds for rural development if the “Club of Six” gets its way.

The club, which includes Germany, France and Britain, take the view that they should pay just 1% into the EU budget.
