With little or no reduction seen in first early plantings, and second early and maincrop estimates up on last year, National Potato Committee Chairman, John Sheridan said, “Growers can expect another very difficult year as surplus supplies will force prices to uneconomic levels.This could happen, after a season that already has additional tonnage of up to 50,000 tonnes over last year”.

Bumper yields led to a very sluggish market and depressed prices since December, said Mr Sheridan, in contrast to much improved prices in Britain and Europe, where yields fell by 5m tonnes.
