Bruton says rendering industry in crisis

THE rendering industry is in severe financial difficulty and runs the risk of bankruptcy, warned former Taoiseach John Bruton in the Dáil.

He predicted that the banning of landfill disposal for meat and bone meal will drive the industry out of the Republic.

Subsidies are paid to the industry to dispose of meat and bone meal, of 250 per tonne in the Republic and 190 per tonne in Northern Ireland.
