CHANGES in Ireland’s policy in relation to scrapie in sheep, announced by Agriculture and Food Minister Joe Walsh, reflect a harmonised approach at EU level.

While whole-flock depopulation will continue for the time being, depopulated holdings may be restocked with sheep after a minimum de-contamination period (usually one month), subject to veterinary advice.

A survey of rams, which will generate data on resistance to scrapie among breeds in the national flock, is also being undertaken.
