Bovine botulism still a problem

Ireland: There is a continuing problem with bovine botulism in different areas of the country, Minister of State Liam Aylward confirmed when issuing advice to farmers on reducing risks.

Recently reported cases are believed to have been caused by cattle coming into contact with poultry litter contaminated with decaying carcasses. Risks to cattle increase during summer, but it is generally accepted humans are resistant to the types of toxin that affect bovines.

The risk to human health from consumption of milk or meat from cattle on farms with cases of botulism appears to be remote.
