AGREEMENT between the beef factories and farmers on any issue is about as rare as a fine summer. Yet, a good working relationship with farmers is essential for beef processors, and should be as important as good weather for farmers.

What a welcome change to find they agree that the outcome of the upcoming World Trade Organisation talks is of serious concern to both. Free inflow of beef from outside of the EU poses the single biggest threat to viability for Irish farmers producing beef in the future. In a generally high cost economy which Ireland has become even the most efficient beef producers will find it difficult to compete at world prices for beef.

There is still a lot to be learned on the eventual impact which the enlargement of the EU to 25 members last year will have on the beef sector. Further enlargement is planned within the next few years.
