EU and German officials have uncovered a massive fraud scheme involving 45 containers of buffalo meat from India seized near Hamburg.

The shipment was bound for Russia, and labels and health certificates had been faked to suggest that the meat was from Australia or Brazil.

The food trade scandal was uncovered by the German news magazine, Der Spiegel, which said similar cases of fraudulent meat had turned up at three German Baltic Sea ports. The meat is nearly impossible to sell internationally because of the prevalence of foot-and-mouth disease in India.
