Algeria: THE beef processing industry has welcomed the announcement by Agriculture and Food Minister Mary Coughlan that the Algerian market for fresh and chilled Irish beef is to reopen.

Algeria had banned imports of beef from Ireland following the BSE crisis in Europe in 2000, but in the previous five years it purchased a total of 70,000 tonnes.

Meat Industry Ireland said regaining access to non-EU market outlets remained extremely important for the Irish beef sector, particularly during the peak autumn production season.
