THE failure to have one final sugar processing campaign in Mallow this year has been blamed on difficulties between beet growers in Leinster and Munster.

A former Food Minister, Ned O’Keeffe, TD, made the claim when he spoke at the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Mallow.

“I have to say that if the farmers of Munster and the farmers of Leinster got their act together we would have a sugar beet industry in 2006. But the difficulties between the two areas created a problem in the industry for Greencore,” he said.
