That would be good news for first-time buyers forced to rent during the boom years of the 1990s. Back then, rents were lower than the cost of a mortgage, but the trend is now reversing.

Dr Dan McLaughlin, chief economist at the Bank of Ireland, says the trend is good news for first-time buyers. Slowing house prices and falling rental income are sending clear signals to investors that bonds and other investment forms offer more attractive ways of making money.
