Give Denis O’Brien an Ireland shirt and show his critics the red card

I KNOW I’m only supposed to do begrudgery on this page. I’m supposed to get angry about the uneven distribution of wealth in Ireland, the immorality of policies that favour the rich, the injustice and unfairness that so many people suffer from.

Simply the best — that’s why Hillary deserves to make history

I WANT to see Hillary Clinton win for several reasons. First, she is immensely able — easily the most able of the candidates left in the race. Her international and economic expertise make even candidates a good deal older than her look like novices.

Church and State: Two institutions to be feared by vulnerable citizens

WHEN you have the privilege of writing an opinion column, you try as hard as you can to be fair. By inclination and temperament, I’m always inclined to take sides and I can get emotional about some things.

Why force lone parents to make choices that are not available?

YOU will recognise the passage, won’t you? “The State … guarantees to protect the Family in its constitution and authority, as the necessary basis of social order and as indispensable to the welfare of the Nation and the State.

Ireland ’08: We’ll win the Grand Slam, but we may lose Bertie

WISE old political commentators who made their names by predicting the outcome of elections and other momentous events used to have a saying when things went wrong.

It’s great to give now, but why do we turn a blind eye for rest of year?

A COUPLE of years ago, I was asked to deputise for Santa Claus in one of our projects at Barnardos. Santa himself was having a particularly busy time and although he had promised he would visit each child personally on Christmas eve, he just wasn’t going to be able to make their Christmas party on time.

Budget bombshell has a long fuse wire stretching into heart of HSE

THERE is always a bombshell in a budget. Sometimes it can take a long time to spot, or to oppose. Sometimes the bombshells don’t get spotted for years. But there’s always something that, once it’s discovered, leads to unravelling.
