Because the story wasn’t complete after the first film they did a second, then they went to Tokyo, then half a dozen films later we find ourselves in 2016 with no Fast & Furious film.

But don’t worry there is one on the way, the story will continue, the cliffhangers will be rescued, all of your questions (like how many cars can they destroy in this one) will be answered.
