Titanfall 2 matchmaking looks at player contribution

Titanfall 2’s matchmaking is being overhauled meaning matches should be more balanced than they were in the original.

Titanfall 2 matchmaking looks at player contribution

Respawn’s Mike Kalas covered some of the lessons learned from the release of Titanfall 1, including that the matchmaking process looked chaotic and confusing. He wrote, “By showing the teams being formed in the lobby, the process can appear chaotic and encourages players to back out and search again, which adds to the visual confusion.”

He added that players’ skill was updated after each round, but there was no way to move players to a different match. Unless players left a lobby to improve their situation, Respawn couldn’t help them out and put them in a more fitting match.

Titanfall 2’s matchmaking changes the mechanisms behind the scenes and he says that the quality of matches and speed of matchmaking is better across the board. The new system uses wins and losses, of course, but also looks at a player’s overall contribution to a match. This means that players who are still getting to grips with the game but happen to find themselves on winning sides won’t end up in over their heads too soon.

Kalas finished the blog post by saying that the upcoming Tech Test, which we’ll likely hear more about at Gamescom, will “not only test the strength of our servers, but also prove that our matchmaking system can do what it should be.”
