IMDb ranks the top movies of the last 25 years
With hundreds of millions of users who all have access to an easy rating system for the films they've seen, the IMDb is a really great way to get a snapshot of what films people actually enjoy and watch, rather than the ones which just earned good marks from critics. That's a pretty invaluable tool, and just one small part of what makes it such an amazing site.
The list of best movies is broken down handily by year, with the highest ranked title from that twelvemonth winning out. There are some filmmakers which have really made their mark, like Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson and David Fincher but the more recent years seem to pretty much belong to Christopher Nolan.
Here's the full list by year, which contains some really great movies...
- Interstellar
- The Wolf of Wall Street
- Django Unchained
- Untouchable
- Inception
- Inglourious Basterds
- The Dark Knight
- Into the Wild
- The Departed
- Batman Begins
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- The Return of the King
- The Two Towers
- The Fellowship of the Ring
- Memento
- Fight Club
- Saving Private Ryan
- Life is Beautiful
- Fargo
- Seven
- The Shawshank Redemption
- Schindler's List
- Reservoir Dogs
- The Silence of the Lambs
- Goodfellas
That's a pretty obvious list in a lot of ways, including many films which have always been popular with audiences (like Shawshank) and a fair few which also went on to awards glory. Still there are some weird inclusions - Memento as the best film to release in 2000? And while Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films are an amazing technical achievement, Return of the King was a bit of a messy affair. The Chrisopher Nolan love in is also a bit bewildering.
But this obviously represents a cross section of millions of people from all over the world, which is about as definitive a list as you're ever going to get.
What will the listing say for 2015? As of right now, Inside Out is looking like a landslide with a score of 8.4 which puts it at number 64 on the IMDb top 250. The Martian isn't far behind with 8.2, which is matched by Mad Max Fury Road.
