Naughty Dog explains why Uncharted 4 will run at 30fps

Naughty Dog revealed that Uncharted 4 will run at 1080p and 30 frames-per-second in single player. This, Uncharted 4’s co-lead designer Anthony Newman said, is to ensure they can make the best game possible.

“We had a really long, involved conversation about it with all the leads and directors,” Newman said. “We just realised that, for the game we wanted to make, to make the best game possible, [30fps] was just something that we had to do.”

Naughty Dog said that while 60fps was possible, it would drag development out and could even impact the overall story.

“The same amount of geometry would take longer to make because it would have to be so heavily optimized. And so that could end up having story repercussions. ‘We want to have this scene, but we don’t have the time to make the environment.’ It’s a feature, like any other, and you have to consider it against everything else.”

The developer is aiming for 60fps for multiplayer.

Uncharted 4 will be released in 2016.
