CONSUMERS face a huge hike in the cost of electrical goods after an EU directive on product recycling.

It was reported yesterday that from January an extra charge of as much as €75 will be slapped on all electrical goods to pay for the cost of recycling them.

The charge is expected to range from around €5 for a small item to around €75 for fridges, items that are notoriously difficult to dispose of cleanly due to the CFC gases they release.
