The volume of retail sales in Ireland fell 0.5% last month compared to September, figures released by the CSO on Friday showed.

Sectors showing the highest monthly volume decreases were Hardware, Paints & Glass (-3.5%), Clothing, Footwear & Textiles (-1.9%), and Motor Trades (-1.7%). Excluding Motor Trades, the monthly volume of retail sales was down by 0.1% in October compared to September. 

The largest monthly volume increases were recorded in Food, Beverages & Tobacco (Specialised Stores) (+4.4%), Fuel (+1.6%), and Books, Newspapers & Stationery (+0.9%).

Overall in the 12 months from October 2024, the volume of retail sales increased by 2.1%.

The value of Retail Sales fell by 0.5% in the month but is up 3.4% in the 12 months to October 2025. "Excluding Motor Trades, the value of Retail Sales remained unchanged in the month and rose by 3.1% on an annual basis," said CSO statistician Tommy Allen.
