Landlords have dominated the latest list of tax defaulters published by Revenue.

Brian Murphy of 25 Garran Ferney, Carrigaline, Co Cork whose occupation was listed as consultant had the largest settlement of €845,343 in a Revenue investigation case for under-declaration of income tax.

The settlement was made up of €419,724 in tax, €110,826 in interest, and €314,793 in penalties. None of the settlement amount remains unpaid.

The second largest settlement was €229,137 for Swift Engineering Services & Sales Limited with an address in Rathgorey, Dunleer, Co Louth, and occupation listed as mechanical & structural engineering services.

The Revenue audit case for the under-declaration of corporation tax, PAYE/PRSI/USC, and Vat resulted in a settlement made up of €131,019 in tax, €58,900 in interest, and €39,218 in penalties. None of the settlement remained unpaid as of June 30.

The two cases were among 11 published by Revenue, where total settlements of €2.2m have been made. Seven cases exceeded €100,000.

Revenue said that as of June 30, just one settlement — amounting to €178,780 — remained unpaid. They said they would vigorously pursue the collection and enforcement of unpaid settlements.

However, in some cases, recovery of the full unpaid amount will not be possible, Revenue added.

In cases where there is no agreement to a penalty, or where a person fails to pay an agreed penalty, the courts will determine the penalty. Revenue said there were nine such cases in the three months up to the end of June with €1.8m in penalties imposed.

William Hale, a retired ornament dealer of Church St, Ballyporeen, Co Tipperary, received a court penalty of €764,630 relating to the under-declaration of income tax.

Sean Clarke, an accountant trading as Clarke & Co Chartered Accountants of 14 Cairnbrook Manor, Glenamuck Rd, Carrickmines, Dublin 18 received a court penalty of €353,313 relating to an under-declaration of income tax in the amount of €600,082.

Details were also published of 57 court cases where €98,530 in fines were imposed. These included nine cases of failing to lodge income tax returns, three cases of failing to lodge Vat returns, and two cases of failing to remit Vat.

There were eight cases of the misuse of marked mineral oil and 31 cases of excise offences for tobacco smuggling, illegal selling of tobacco, and possession of untaxed tobacco for sale. There were four cases of failure to hold a current liquor licence.
