Limerick clothing retailer and Monaghan mechanic appear on latest tax defaulters list

Revenue published details of 24 cases with a total settlement of €9.6m covering the three-month period up until September 30.

A motor mechanic in Monaghan, a Kildare haulier, and a Limerick clothes retailer are amongst those appearing on the latest tax defaulters list published by the Revenue.

Eamonn Galligan of Drumass, Innsikeen, Co Monaghan, with a listed occupation of motor mechanic, topped the list with a €1,864,089 settlement in a Revenue investigation case for the under-declaration of income tax. 

The settlement was made up of tax of €711,892, including a surcharge of €6,310, interest of €446,615 and penalties of €705,582. 

Revenue said as of September 30, the entire amount remains unpaid.

The second largest settlement was in relation to haulier MDS Distribution Limited, with an address at Road R, 1Q, Toughers Business Park, Ladytown, Naas, Co Kildare. 

The settlement amount of €1,060,161 is related to a Revenue investigation case for the underdeclaration of Vat. 

The settlement was made up of €399,331 in taxes, €261,499 in interest and €399,331 in penalties. 

Revenue said €660,830 remained unpaid.

Wickham Properties Limited, a clothing retailer trading as Noel's with an address at 5 Bedford Row, Co Limerick, was third on the list with a settlement of €809,423 in a Revenue investigation case for under-declaration of corporation tax, PAYE/PRSI/USC and Vat. 

The settlement was made up of tax of €312,601, including a surcharge of €58, interest of €184,221, and penalties of €312,601. 

Revenue said €463,423 remained unpaid.

Revenue published details of 24 cases with a total settlement of €9.6m covering the three-month period up until September 30, €3.7m remained unpaid as of that date. 

Revenue said it vigorously pursues collection and enforcement of unpaid settlements but in some cases, collection of the full unpaid amount will not be possible such as when a company enters liquidation.

Revenue also published details of 63 prosecutions they pursued in court that included 17 cases of failure to file a tax return and failure to produce books and records, 20 cases of misuse of marked mineral oil and 23 cases of excise offences for tobacco smuggling, illegal selling of tobacco and possession of untaxed tobacco for sale.

The published details remain a portion of Revenue's overall activity.
