Meath-based confectionery company Lir Chocolates reported an operating loss of €1.26m during its 2025 financial year following a decline in sales, new company accounts show.

According to the company’s latest financial statement, it generated sales of €40.4m during 2025, a decline of €1.3m compared to 2024. The company’s costs were flat year-on-year at €34.4m resulting in a gross profit of just over €6m.

However, after distribution costs and administrative expenses, the company reported an operating loss for the year of €1.26m compared to the operating profit of €360,000 in 2024.

The directors of the company did not recommend a dividend payment last year.

The majority of the company’s revenue was generated in the UK. The statement shows that it generated sales of €29.46m in the UK compared to €2.97m in Ireland and €7.98m across the rest of the world.

The company had, on an average month, 224 employees with sales and wages costing €8.3m.

In the statement, the company outlined a number of risks to the business including inflation increases to wages or infrastructure costs above sales price increases, increasing interest rates, changes to foreign exchange rates, as well as higher commodity prices.

The company said these risks are being managed by “product sourcing, strict cost control, and buying and selling in the same currencies along with entering into derivative foreign currency contracts to mitigate the effects of movements in the value of sterling relative to euro”.

As of the end of December, the company had net assets of €10.9m, down from €12.1m in 2024, with net current assets of €5.9m.

“Taking into consideration the current environment, the company forecasts show that it is expected to return to profit and generate positive cash flows for the going concern period as assessed. The group continues to have significant cash resources and continues to trade profitability,” the company said.
