Irish parents have been warned a toy slime purchased on Shein's online marketplace poses a chemical risk and could damage children's reproductive systems.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) said the slime was sold by a third party seller on Shein's marketplace. The CCPC said Tototang Slime Shop Coffee Clear Slime and Tototang Slime Shop Honey Clear Slime "presents a chemical risk from excessive boron which could damage children's reproductive systems".

"The product presents a chemical risk. The migration of boron from the toy slime exceeds the toy safety requirements. Ingestion or contact with an excessive quantity of boron may harm the health of children by damaging the reproductive system," the CCPC said.

The products were sold by third party seller Foshan Nanhai District Barbarian Bull Toys Firm.

The Coffee Clear Slime brand is TotoTang Slime Shop, and the batch number is AM-TT-202508. The product identifier is sh25021989977222884. The type/model number is Tototang-25. Around 53 of the Coffee Clear Slime were purchased in the Republic of Ireland while 226 of the Honey Clear Slime were purchased here.

"If you purchased one of these products, please stop use immediately, discard the product, and keep it out of the reach of children," the CCPC said on Tuesday. "If you wish to contact Shein for a refund or have any concerns or questions about this product this can be done by contacting Shein customer services by email at eurcsteam@shein.com."

A spokesperson for Shein said the company takes product safety very seriously and is committed to offering safe and reliable products to its customers. "Upon learning of these claims, Shein immediately removed the items from its site as a precaution while the company investigates.

"On Shein marketplace, both Shein branded products as well as products from a global network of third-party sellers are available. All vendors are required to comply with Shein's code of conduct and must abide by the relevant laws and regulations of the countries the company operates in. Shein works closely with international third-party testing agencies such as Intertek, SGS, BV and TUV SUD, to ensure compliance with product safety standards.”
