US clothing chain Urban Outfitters will open its second store in Ireland on Cork's St Patrick's Street.

Opening on Thursday, the retailer is located in a 5,000 sq ft premises over two floors, which had been vacant for the past six years.

The premises, at 101 St Patrick's Street, alongside Gentleman's Quarters, is the site of a former Methodist church. It was previously occupied by Dorothy Perkins which closed in 2019.

In an update, the company said the new store will host a variety of proprietary brands, including Urban Outfitters Masterbrand, BDG, iets Frans…, Kimchi Blue, Loom and Ayker, all designed in-house in the London Head Office.

Emma Wisden, President, Urban Outfitters EU, said: “We have delivered strong growth across Europe over the past couple of years, and we are excited to be in a position to keep expanding despite current economic challenges. We have always prioritised creating an exceptional in-store experience alongside our stand out proprietary brands, curated vintage product, global brands and unique home and lifestyle products."

"We are excited to be able to bring this to new customers in new regions like Cork.”

The Cork opening follows new store launches this year in Freiburg, Bremen, Milan, and Gateshead, with three more European openings expected before the end of the year. The Cork store will be Urban Outfitters’ 72nd European Store, and the second in Ireland, joining the existing Dublin store.

Its arrival in Cork boosts the retail offering on St. Patrick's Street, which has been steadily recovering following a large number of permanent closures during the covid pandemic.

New arrivals in recent years, include Flannels (at the former Eason store), JD Sport (formerly A-Wear), outdoor wear specialists North Face, UK footwear retailer Dune, fashion jewellers Lovisa at the former Game Stop shop, Carrolls Irish gift shop (formerly Oasis), Krispy Kreme doughnuts (formerly Porter newsagents), and jewellery sellers Neve/Diamond Direct, at No 22, the former Cudmore's, under the banner of Austen & Blake.

A fresh planning application has also been lodged for the redevelopment of the former Debenham's unit, considered the street's flagship premises.
