Forecourts operator Circle K has announced that it is making hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) fuel available to all diesel drivers at selected locations.
The fuel will be available to all diesel drivers on forecourts at eight Circle K locations including Parkway West in Dublin as well as key sites across Ireland’s national road network including, City Avenue, City North which is along the M1, at junction eight near Cashel and junction 14 near Fermoy both along the M6, Kill North, Kill South and N4 east in Mullingar.
Prior to this, HVO100 was primarily available to Circle K’s business customers and used in the company’s own fleet of delivery vehicles. Circle K has been offering the biofuel in Ireland since 2022.
The company said the move was part of its plans to expand access to lower-emission fuel options. “Over the next year, Circle K plans to roll out the fuel to even more of its sites, giving more drivers the opportunity to choose a cleaner alternative to regular diesel,” the company said.
Circle K said the fuel, named milesBIO HVO100, is a “renewable biofuel made from waste materials and by-products from the food industry”.
“It allows diesel vehicles to significantly cut their carbon emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel without needing any changes to the engine. The fuel is ISCC-certified and completely fossil-free.”
The fuel will be marked with unique branding and grey nozzles to differentiate it from petrol and diesel. Senior fuel director at Circle K Jonathan Diver said it marks a “major milestone in our journey towards more sustainable mobility in Ireland”.
“With milesBIO HVO100 now available at 30 locations nationwide, Circle K operates the largest HVO refuelling network in the country. Today’s announcement marks a significant step in making low-emission fuel solutions more accessible to the public and supporting motorists who want to reduce their environmental impact,” he said.
milesBIO HVO100 is already used by Circle K’s business customers.
Circle K says it operates 420 forecourt and retail locations across the country. Of these stations, 170 are owned by Circle K and 250 are owned by independent retail partners.
It also operates a large commercial fuels business, with over 20 depots and two owned terminals across the country. It currently employs around 2,300 people.
