The number of contactless card transactions has continued to rise while the number of ATM transactions falling by around 11%, figures from Bank of Ireland for the second quarter of the year show.

The bank's data showed contactless card transactions - digital wallets, Apple Pay/Google Pay - increased by 2%, whilst contactless ‘tap and go’ payment levels remained the same compared to the equivalent period in 2024.

Over 1.7 million contactless ‘tap and go’ payments took place on May 31, with over 830,000 eCommerce contactless card transactions made on June 27, making those the busiest days for both these types of digital transactions by Bank of Ireland customers in the period.

The number of ATM transactions dropped by 11% from May to July compared to 2024. Bank of Ireland is continuing a rollout of upgraded ATMs in its 182 branches across the island of Ireland.

“There is a steady trend in consumers increasingly engaging with digital payments options, as the ease and flexibility of making both eCommerce transactions and digital wallet payments suits their busy lives," said Bank of Ireland chief operating officer Ciaran Coyle.
