New group editor appointed to the Irish Examiner and The Echo

Cork native John O'Mahony succeeds Tom Fitzpatrick as editor of the Irish Examiner and Gráinne McGuinness as editor of The Echo

John O'Mahony has been appointed the new editor of the Irish Examiner and The Echo.

Karen O'Donoghue, managing director of the publications, confirmed the announcement to staff on Monday, saying the appointment was a key step towards combining editorial operations across both titles.

He succeeds Tom Fitzpatrick as editor of the Irish Examiner and Gráinne McGuinness as editor of The Echo.

A Cork native, Mr O'Mahony has been with the Irish Examiner for more than 25 years. He spent 20 years on the media outlet's news desk first as Assistant News Editor and then as News Editor. He was appointed Managing Editor Content in 2020.

"This appointment marks a significant moment for both the Irish Examiner and The Echo," Ms O'Donoghue said. "John brings not only a wealth of experience and editorial integrity, but also a deep understanding of the communities we serve and the evolving needs of our readers.
