Well-known Cork city store chain, Twilight News has announced the closure of its three locations after more than a decade in business.
First opened in 2012, the family-run chain was led by John and Sinead Murphy, with stores located on Patrick's Street, Paul Street Shopping Centre and Parnell Place Bus Station.
"After 12 years in the heart of the city centre, we feel it's time for us to close our beloved Twilight News shops," it was announced on the company's social media account.
Twilight News' Patrick's Street shop was one of the few convenience stores on Cork's main street not owned by a major chain, with its closure going against recent trends seen in the area.
In 2023, a number of new developments took place on Patrick's Street, including the opening of UK luxury fashion chain, Flannels, Spanish clothing retailer, Mango and Irish gift shop, Carrolls.
Last year also saw the purchase of the former Debenhams and Roches Stores sight on Cork's main street by sport's retailer, Elverys in a deal worth €12m.
However, the Twilight News' announcement follows another recent closure of a long-standing family-run business on Patrick's Street. In May 2023, menswear store, Con Murphy's announced that it would be ceasing operations after more than 90 years in business, following the retirement of the shop's manager, Donie Walsh.
"As we close the doors of our three stores for the last time, we carry countless memories of a great 12 years in the heart of the city centre," Twilight News continued.
The post also thanked customers who remained loyal of the family-run company, as well as paid tribute to staff and friends made throughout its time in business, acknowledging employees who made Twilight "the happy and vibrant place it was."
