French telecoms billionaire Xavier Niel, who controls Eir, is expanding further in continental Europe after buying a small stake in Belgian firm Proximus, as the company sets out on a new acquisition drive. 

The transaction involves Mr Niel taking a 6% stake in Proximus through Carraun, which in turn is the holding company of Eir.
